Sam Dexter Johnson was born August 29, 1959 in Helena, Arkansas to the late Sam and Lottie Johnson.
Sam Johnson was the third of eight children born to this union. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. A.L. Woodson.
Sam was educated in the Helena-West Helena School District. He was a proud Central High School graduate. After high school, Sam attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country. After serving his country, he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked for many years at The Art Institute of Chicago and later worked at Fenger High School in Chicago, Illinois.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lottie Johnson, his grandmother, Pearlie Mae Stewart, a brother, Jerry Lee Parnell, Sr., a sister, Cheryl Denise Johnson and an aunt, Pearlie Mae Parnell. Sam answered his heavenly call on April 12, 2018.
He leaves to cherish his memories, two daughters; Manisa Hubbard ( Seneca ) of Conyers, GA and Myriam Yvonne Johnson Ellis ( James) of Summerville, SC, four grandchildren; Kaylin Ellis, Shkaelah Rutledge, Paris Ellis and Saniyya Lyn Hubbard; Sam also leaves three sisters; Thelma Johnson(Spencer) of Memphis TN , Marcia Johnson and Debbie Johnson of Southaven, MS, two brothers; Willie James Parnell (Mae) of Memphis, TN, and Patrick Johnson of Atlanta, GA, two uncles; J.B. Parnell of Clarksdale, MS and Charles Parnell(Pat)of Phoenix, AZ and host of nieces , nephews , cousins ,other family and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Zion Hill M.B. Church. Rev. Larry Edwards will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Brown's Funeral Home.
