A Helena-West Helena Police Department team effort led to the apprehension and arrest of an armed suspect, Wednesday, April 18, 2018.
Helena-West Helena Police Department received information leading to the arrest of, 20-year-old, Devontae D. Higgins, of Helena. Higgins was in possession of an assault rifle, a handgun, ammunition and a bullet proof vest.
The PD received a description of the vehicle Higgins was in. This information was dispatched to Officers Williester Black, Darrius Watson, Carl Nelson and John Bailey.
Dispatched advised the officers that Higgins was believed to be in a tan mini van, in the area of Levee and Pecan Street. Officers began to close in on the suspect.
When officers located and tried to stop Higgins, he fled from the area of Adams and Walnut to where the he lives on Cherry Street.
Higgins jumped out and left the mini van running and in gear. The 2006 Pontiac Torrent ran across the street, ending up on a curb.
Officer Black caught and took Higgins into custody as he was entering his house. Officers found weapons in the mini van, an assault rifle, a handgun with a full clip and one round in the chamber, two boxes of ammunition. And a bullet proof vest was also taken into evidence.
Higgins was transported to the Helena-West Helena Police Department for processing. He is charged with Aggravated Assault, Fleeing, Disorderly Conduct - Unreasonable or Excessive Behavior, Driving without a Drivers License, No Seat Belt, Failure to stop at a Stop Sign, and there was an active Warrant for his arrest.
