According to a report from the Helena-West Helena police department, officers forcibly entered the house after hearing a gunshot coming from inside. After entering the house police discovered Burkett's wife, Chonda Owens, age 50, dead from an apparent gunshot to the face. Police also found Burkett, 51, injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Burkett was taken to Helena Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis.

One person was killed and another injured in an apparent murder/attempted suicide on the evening of December 30 at 165 Oakland Ave. in Helena. Police responded to a domestic complaint at the residence around 10 p.m. that evening.

A conflicting report said that Lyndon Jerome Burkett answered the door and then collapsed. After entering the house police discovered Burkett’s wife, Chonda Owens, age 50, dead from an apparent gunshot to the face. Police also found Burkett, 51, injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Burkett was taken to Helena Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis.

The couples’ two grandchildren were in the house at the time the shootings occurred, but were unharmed. They were taken to the police station where relatives were contacted.

Burkett, who has a history of domestic abuse, was released from the hospital and returned to his home by H-WH police.  Residents nearby reported seeing Burkett at the home where the incident occurred over the past few days. The H-WH Police Department went back and picked Burkett up.  He appeared before a judge on January 3 for formal charges.  He was turned over to the Phillips County sheriff’s department and was transported to Craighead County Correctional facility where he is currently in custody.  Burkett is being charged with capital murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Burkett, a preacher, is known locally for his affiliation with the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church-Santuck in Marvell.
