Queen Guydon, 93, of Helena-West Helena, passed away Dec. 5, 2017.

Queen Guydon, 93, of Helena-West Helena, passed away Dec. 5, 2017.

She was born Aug. 16, 1924 to Robert P. and Willie King in Parkdale, spending her early years in Gould, where she joined the Rankin Chapel Baptist Church there at an early age.

Queen was educated at a school where her father was principal in Gould until the 8th grade.  She was then sent to Pine Bluff to attend high school at J.C. Corbin Laboratory School on the college campus, as there was no high school in Gould.  She remained on campus to attend college, receiving her bachelor's degree in elementary education from AM&N College, now UAPB.

During college she married Chester Guydon, Sr. and they lived in Pine Bluff for the next 10 years with Queen working at a school in Sherrill. In 1960, the family moved to Helena, where her husband was already working as a high school band director.

In Helena, she joined New Hope M.B. Church and was a faithful member for many years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, usher and as a member of the Missionary Society.

She also began working at North End Elementary School for the next 26 years until retiring in 1984. By her retirement, she had taught many students, her students' children and their grandchildren. Wherever she went, there was someone who remembered her as their second grade teacher.

After retirement, she worked as a volunteer at Helena Hospital for over 25 years and made many friends while working as a greeter at the reception desk. Queen was also involved in the Retired Teachers Association and AARP.

Her husband, Chester Guydon, Sr, a sister, Arlena Edwards, five brothers, Howard, Herman, Robert, Howard and Eric King, and a daughter, Willietta Joy Brooks preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her passing, a son, Stan (Janet) Guydon of Helena; a daughter, Denise Roulhac; and a son. Chester Guydon, Jr, both of Little Rock; a sister, Ethel Lee Cabine of Antioch, Illinois; three grandchildren, William (Libra) Roulhac, Willard R. and Kendra Brooks; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Roulhac and Willard R. Brooks, Jr.; and many in-laws, other relatives, acquaintances and good friends, Verna and Fred Hartfield and Ludie Johnson.
