William Rozell Lane was born March 28, 1923 in Monroe County (Jones Ridge), the son of Fred Lane and Eddie Lee Lane.

He dedicated his life to Jesus Christ at an early age and served faithfully as a lifelong member and deacon of the Branch Missionary Baptist Church until his death.  He was the eldest church member. He loved his church family and attended frequently.

William’s life could be captured in three inspiring words: strong, wise and kindhearted.  He was blessed with eight children, who respected, loved and cared deeply for him.  In addition to his biological children, William raised two granddaughters, Adria Wilson and Shanetta Taylor.

William lived an exemplary life before his family and Christ.  He worked tirelessly to support his family.  As a proud Navy veteran, he served his country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Knox.  Upon returning home, he managed the family farm. He later worked for and retired from Riceland Foods, as a machine operator in Stuttgart.  He was a foster grandparent for the Marvell Public Schools and served as a mason. William gave his best to Christ, his family and his church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nancy L. Jarrett Lane; his parents; a son, Eldridge Lane; a daughter, Alcenia Lane; brothers, Frank Foster, Sr., Leroy Wilborn; and sisters, Queen E. Harden, Earlie M. Jackson, and Mayola Houston.

After 94 blessed years, William Rozell Lane received the gift of eternal life from his heavenly father on Nov. 14, 2017.  He began his day as usual and at the breakfast hour, he gently slipped away with family near his side.  He was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Kelvin Lane, Sr. (Arlean) and Freddie Lane; four daughters, Laverne McGruder (Julious), Sandra Cummings (Earl), Lewonda Gipson (Rex), and Karron Enlow (Robert); brother, Jesse Lane (Pamele); sister, Clara Nicholson; 17 grandchildren; 26 great- grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and love ones.
