As the clock hit 0:00 at Cliff Harris Stadium on Saturday at the conclusion of the 91st Battle of the Ravine in Arkadelphia Saturday with Ouachita Baptist (9-2) winning 49-42, true freshman and Helena-West Helena Central High School alum Dameyun McDonald joined the celebration of a huge victory over the Tigers’ arch rival, a win that snapped Henderson’s nation-leading 31-game road winning streak, and a victory that clinched a Great American Conference title.

McDonald, a standout for the Cougars throughout his high school playing days, isn’t your average true freshman for the Tigers. McDonald has come in and made an immediate contribution as a starter on the Tiger defense, including two tackles against the Reddies, who often had to double team block the defensive end.

Defensive Coordinator Paige Anders sang McDonald’s praises after the victory. He said, “Dameyun has great character and is a special player. He’s been a great pickup for our program and he is a special player and exemplifies what we look for. He’s a great kid.”

Anders went on to complement the work ethic of the true freshman saying, “He’s a hard worker and very passionate. Coach (Sam) Dunham has done a great job working with him on our defensive front.”

McDonald, in an interview after the game, spoke passionately about the university. He said, “I love Ouachita. It takes hard work. You have to be focused and dedicated. You have to study hard-both on the field and in the classroom. I love everything about OBU.”

When asked how it felt to win after winning his first Battle of the Ravine, McDonald said, “This is just wonderful. It’s a great experience. It’s even better because we also won the championship.”
