Funeral services for Lera Thomas Byrd will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct.21, at First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Helena-West Helena.

Reverend Nathaniel Hull, Sr., will officiate.

Visitation will be noon to 7 p.m.,  Friday, Oct. 20, at Stephens Funeral  Home Chapel.

Interment will be held in Jackson Memorial Garden in Lexa.



Lera Thomas Byrd was born Dec.5, 1936 to Alfred Harper, Sr., and Ardella Harper in Kilmichael, Mississippi. Lera was the middle child of three children. Both siblings, Alfred Harper, Jr; and L.D. Harper and her parents preceded her in death.

Lera accepted Christ at an early age at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church in Tibbs, Mississippi and later became a member of First Baptist Church in Helena-West Helena. During this time she was honored to serve on the mother’s board, and was active until her health failed.

Lera was married to Fred Byrd, Sr., until her passing.

Lera leaves behinds her children, Rev. Fred (Luevenia) Byrd Jr of Dundee, Mississippi, Ruth Ann (Willie) Taylor of Robinsonville, Mississippi, Ruby Lee Daley of Walls, Mississippi, Louis (Elise) Thomas, Jr., of Memphis, Tennessee; Mildred (Larfayette) Baptist of Walls, Mississippi, Elvatie (John) Harris of Dundee, Mississippi, Neal (Tara) Byrd of Helena-West Helena, Rev. Perry Byrd of Marvell, Ethel Byrd Robinson (Jason) of Helena-West Helena, Sandra Byrd (Joseph) of Jonesboro, and Charles (Diana) Byrd of Helena-West Helena.

 Lera also leaves behind a host of grandchildren great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly
