Within a period of 24 hours two homicides occurred in Phillips County.

According to WREG-TV Channel 3 out of Memphis, Tennessee, Helena-West Helena Police reported Robert Newman, 20, was shot five times just after midnight Tuesday outside his uncle's residence in the Lasalle and DeSoto streets area of the city.

According to WREG-TV Channel 3 out of Memphis, Tennessee, Helena-West Helena Police reported Robert Newman, 20, was shot five times just after midnight Tuesday outside his uncle's residence in the Lasalle and DeSoto streets area of the city.

Newman was airlifted to a Memphis hospital where he died.

Witnesses reportedly told police they spotted a green SUV, maybe a Yukon, leave the area of the shooting. Police report there a couple of persons of interest they are pursuing.

On the same day, law enforcement officials discovered a body inside a burned car. An unconfirmed report says the body was found on a rural roadway just outside the city limits in the Storm Creek area. Also early unconfirmed reports said it was the body of an 18-year-old. At press time, Arkansas State Police had not confirmed the identity of the victim.

Police have not yet determined whether or not the two homicides are related.

The latest shooting victims were Helena-West Helena's fourth and fifth homicides of the year.
