Not much action developed as far as school board races are concerned in the upcoming school election. The deadline to file by petition or a write-in candidate came and went at noon Tuesday with only one contested race in the Barton-Lexa School District.

Evelyn Thomas and Rosetta Ross-Jones filed for the Zone 1 seat on the Barton-Lexa School Board. Thomas' address was listed as 116 Etta Circle in Helena. Ross-Crawford declared Wabash as her place of residence.

Lita-Moore Johnson of Poplar Grove is uncontested for the Zone 2 seat. Chuck Ward of Lexa also has no opponent in Zone 5.

Only one person completed the petition process for a position on the Marvell-Elaine School Board. Mark English will get the nod for the Zone 6 seat. Aremedia Lee of Elaine appeared on the filing list provided by the Phillips County Clerk's Office but the name was apparently scratched from the list.

No other candidates' names appear in any of the other zones in the two school districts that are conducting school elections in 1017. The Barton-Lexa and Marvell-Elaine school districts both have seven zones.

The annual school elections are set for Tuesday, Sept.19. The deadline to register vote in the election is Aug. 21. Early voting begins Tuesday, Sept. 12 and continues until Monday, Sept. 18 during regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Phillips County Courthouse.
