School bells will be ringing again for KIPP Delta students on August 9 ushering in the 2017-2018 fall school term. For the first time in several years, students will be seen scampering to school at the old familiar Beechcrest Elementary School campus.

More than 500 new faces from the KIPP Delta Elementary Literacy Academy will make the move to the newly renovated Beechcrest facility at 1020 Plaza in Helena-West Helena. The Literacy Academy was formerly located on Cherry Street in historic downtown Helena.

KIPP students in grades pre-k through the fifth grade will attend the Beechcrest campus.

“The elementary team is extremely excited to move to the renovated Beechcrest site,” commented Todd Dixon, KIPP Literacy Academy. “Our kids are ecstatic about the playgrounds, and brand new library. The campus will be fully updated to like-new standards. It will be a tremendous place for our kids to learn, play and grow.”

Last spring KIPP Delta Public Schools bought the old school building from the Helena-West Helena School District. The Beechcrest School was originally built way back in 1928.

KIPP has invested more than $7 million in the renovation process over the past nine months. Facility updates feature a media and library center, new playground equipment, a completely rebuilt kitchen, an accessed-controlled security system, new plumbing, roofing, paint and doors.

The Literacy Academy's current location at 215 Cherry St. will be used by KIPP Delta High School next year. That building will also undergo renovations that will include new science labs.

Plans for a ribbon cutting and an open house are currently in the works.

Enrollment is now underway for grades pre-k through 12. KIPP Delta is a free, public charter school that accepts students on a space-available basis.

KIPP's goal is to empower students from educationally underserved communities to develop and foster the knowledge, skills and character traits they will need for success in college and life.
