Just under $300 was taken during a daring daylight robbery of Burger Shack last Friday morning (June 16). According to police reports a lone gunman, described as a tall black male, entered the business just after 6:30 a.m.

One of the employees managed to flee the building and drive to the Helena-West Helena Police station for help. There, she encountered Lt. John Bailey and reported the robbery in progress to the officer. The employee said she heard two gun shots fired as she left the scene.

Bailey immediately radioed all patrol units to respond to the Burger Shack location.

Another employee reported that as she was pulling onto the parking lot she spotted the suspect running away.

When Bailey arrived two employees showed the officer where the subject fired the two shots. A brief search turned up two chrome-like .45 shell casings at the back of the business parking lot.

Reportedly there was $140 in cash and change in the two registers. The intruder took all of the money from both drawers but dropped a register and some coin money as he ran from the building.

Bailey remained at the scene while other officers searched the area for the suspect. They immediately searched Anderson and Kentucky streets looking for evidence that he had been in the vicinity.

After the H-WHPD's General Investigation Bureau arrived, an unknown caller reported that they saw the suspect enter an abandoned house on Helen Street. Officers cleared two abandoned houses on the street without finding the perpetrator.

A Kentucky Street resident told police that he was leaving his mother's house when he heard two shots. He added that a man fitting the suspect's description pointed a gun at him and told him to “get in the house.” He heard a couple more shots and went inside the house like he was told.

The case is still under investigation.
