The Helena-West Helena School District has named Patrick Mugridge, the director of music for Eliza Miller Elementary School for the past four years, as the new band director at Central High School.

Mugridge comes to the position after a very successful tenure at Eliza Miller. Mugridge oversaw the beginning of a drum line, which has held numerous performances in multiple venues. He also instituted an honor choir, and supervised the restart of an elementary band program this past year. In addition to those duties, Mugridge also assisted the now-departed Ken Elliott this past year with the marching band at the high school.

Mugridge was excited to receive the appointment at the high school saying, “Since I have been in Helena-West Helena I have heard stories of the great bands of years gone by at Central High School. I walk through the band room and see a plethora of trophies from many decades. I am excited for the opportunity to see the band gets back to its former glory. I am extremely encouraged to be working with such talented students and look forward to establishing great fellowship between academics, athletics, and the music program.”

School officials were also excited about the future direction of the program under Mugridge’s leadership. Central High School Principal Earnest Simpson III said, “Mr. Mugridge has exhibited tremendous work ethic and commitment since coming to our district. I am confident that the band will soar to new heights under Mr. Mugridge’s direction.”

School Board President Andrew Bagley was also excited about the appointment.

He said, “Mr. Mugridge has done an excellent job building a quality elementary music program at Eliza Miller and brings a wealth of experience in directing bands to our district. He has worked hard and show a commitment to putting kids first and giving them his best each and every day. Having a quality music program is essential to having a top-notch school district and I am confident that Mr. Mugridge is the person to get us there and look forward to the steady growth of our music program over the next few years.”

Before coming to H-WHSD four years ago, Mugridge spent 12 years as the director of bands in Whitwell, Tennessee and another 7 years as the athletic band director at Rhea High School in Evansville, Tennessee.

Mugridge holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocal Music Education from Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. He also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Instrumental Music Education from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. He is currently working on a Master's Degree in Music Education and Instrumental Conducting from Ohio State University.
