Marking its first century of serving Phillips County residents Sunday afternoon, Helena Regional Medical Center honored many of those who had given long years of service to HRMC and to the patients who passed through the doors of the three facilities since 1909.
Dr. Pat Bell, a third-generation physician and the doctor with the longest current service on the HRMC medical staff, offered some personal insight to the hospital’s impact on the community.
“I started working at the old hospital 40 years ago as an orderly and now I am the senior physician in terms of years of service,” Bell said.
“My children have had surgeries here,” Bell said. “I had an abscess four years ago and had to stay in the hospital.”
Bell cited a major vehicular accident that occurred several years ago west of Marvell on Highway 49 as a prime example of HRMC’s importance to critical care.
“I’ve never seen how so many (medical corps) could come together,” Bell said of the care to the injured from that accident.
