The state Health Department issued a boil order Tuesday for Barton-Lexa Water Association customers.
According to Jim Barlow, pollution control inspector for the health department, the order was issued as precautionary measure because of the possibility that contaminated water may have entered the distribution system as the result of inadequate chlorine residual.
Barlow said that “boil water” order requires all affected customers be warned that the water may be unsafe for human consumption. Water used for drinking or food preparation must be boiled briskly for one minute before use. All ice cubes should be discarded and only boiled water should be used to
 make ice.
“This ‘precautionary boil water notice’ will remain in effect until the problem has been corrected,” commented Barlow. “An adequate disinfectant level must be established throughout the distribution system and a bacteriological survey must show that the water is safe to drink.”
