Getting an accurate head count of the people living in Phillips County could mean more federal dollars to fund various projects, Stephanie Greene, who works for the U.S. Census Bureau.
“Three-hundred billion dollars per year in federal and state funds are distributed based on Census counts,” Greene told the Helena-West Helena Lions Club Thursday.
Greene said a simple 10-point questionnaire would be provided to every residence in the U.S. in the coming months.
“We won’t be asking a lot of personal questions,” Greene said. “We just want to know how many people live in your home.”
The U.S. Census report conducted every 10 years has a direct bearing on the number of U.S. House of Representatives in a given state.
“Congressional and local districts are created based on the Census,” Greene said.
Census data is used by businesses for products and services and by community organizations to obtain funding, Greene said.
Some of the agencies whose federal funding are impacted by the Census report include:
  • Child and Adult Care Food Program.
  • National School Lunch Program.
  • Special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
  • Adult education.
  • Vocational education grants.
  • Head Start.
  • Low-income home energy assistance program.
  • Medicaid grants.
  • Unemployment Insurance Program.
  • Workforce Investment Act.
  • Highway planning and construction (federal-aid highways).
The toll free number for Census jobs is 1-866-861-2010.
