Wal-Mart has laid off 300 workers at its headquarters in Bentonville, the last major step in a series of changes geared to make the world's largest retailer more efficient.
Wal-Mart President and CEO Mike Duke told employees of the latest cut in a memo on Wednesday.
The laid off workers include people in Wal-Mart's corporate affairs, finance, human resources, information systems and legal departments.
Wal-Mart earlier made changes to its global sourcing network and cut thousands of Sam's Club jobs. Duke says the changes are to advance the company's strategy of improving its "growth, leverage and returns."
Other retailers have also laid off workers and taken other steps to lower overhead during the economic crunch.
