About 65 youths from Phillips County are scheduled to rally at the state capitol with other Arkansas youth groups, Monday July 13, 2009. They will be carrying handmade signs and banners to raise awareness for American children who don't have health insurance.
The youth are from Freedom Schools being run this summer by Boys, Girls, Adults Community Development Center of Marvell. BGACDC operates two freedom sites, which are located in Marvell and Elaine. Monday’s activities are part of an effort called National Day of Social Action.
Other members of the community are welcome to join us, or just come by and check out what is going on, Rev. Jerome Turner, Director of Youth and Family Development at BGACDC said.
The day will start at 10:30 a.m.  with a welcome by Rev. Turner, followed by  a celebration called Harambee, which means "working together for a common purpose" in Swahili. Festivities also will include cheers, chants and speeches.
Freedom Schools, established by the Children's Defense Fund, operate in more than 70 sites across the United States.
Designed to help children excel and to believe in themselves, Freedom Schools focus on literacy, cultural heritage, parental involvement, servant leadership and social action.
