The Phillips County Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Malco Theater in Helena. The five schools represented this year were Barton Elementary, Barton Junior High School, DeSoto School, Beechcrest Elementary School, KIPP Delta College Preparatory School and Marvell Academy.
Students participating in the bee (listed alphabetically) were Rimeshia Augustus, Javon Brown, Tori Bryant, Camille Culp, Jasmin Fleuranvil, Michael Hall, Brianna Hardison, Skylar Huggs, Lathan Love, Dylan McGee, Rachael Murdock, Jason Scaife, Bryan Scott, Mary Claire Stewart, Marely Vincent, Haley Warren, Megan Wilkison, and Katherine Wright.
Mrs. Nancy Howe served as the enunciator, and Mrs. Martha Duren explained the format and the rules. The judges were Emily Johnson, Julia Nordsieck, and Linda English.
Certificates were given to all participants. The first, second, and third place winners received cash prizes and spelling medals. Marley Vincent won first place, Camille Culp won second place, and Haley Warren won third place. As the winner of the Phillips county spelling bee, Marley Vincent will attend the Mid-South Spelling Bee sponsored by the Commercial Appeal, at the Al Chymia Shrine Center in Memphis on March 3. The winner of that bee earns the right to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington in May.
