Howard Smith still wants his former position as assistant principal at Eliza Miller Junior High School and not the role of counselor Superintendent Willie Williams assigned  him to for the 2009-2010 year.
The board resumed its discussion of Smith’s transfer to the alternative learning center in a special called meeting Monday night. The meeting ended without resolution and the board voted to continue the matter to its Sept. 8 meeting.
Marcia Barnes, a member of the Little Rock law firm of Mitchell, Blackstock, Barnes, Wagoner, Ivers and Sneddon, is representing Smith.
Lawrence Jackson, who represents the school district, was also present at the meeting.
Board member Rayne Gordon said Tuesday he felt the board would “work something out” in the weeks to come.
Meanwhile, the administration is preparing for the staff to vacate the Helena-West Helena School District Central Office on Valley Drive and relocate to a site yet to be named in downtown Helena to make room for the alternative learning center.
Superintendent Williams has reiterated that the district faces an Oct.1 deadline to have the alternative learning center site in place or lose $1.2 million in matching funds. The central office will undergo remodeling to convert it to the alternative learning center.
Among the sites under consideration for the administrative staff is a building on Ohio Street owned by Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas. John Ruskey’s Quapaw Canoe Co. occupies the downstairs in the building.
