For his Eagle Scout project, Tristan Ainsworth undertook a major community renovation project. His project included the removal and replacement of the roof covering the Merci Train.
The Merci Train is house at the American legion Post No. 41 in Helena. The Merci Train is also known as the French Gratitude or the 48. It was the 1949 Europe-U.S. friendship train.
Composed of 49 cars and filled with gifts, the Merci Train arrived in New York City on Feb. 3, 1949 and was divided among the then 48 states with the remaining car shared by the District of Columbia and Hawaii.
Currently, 43 of the 49 boxcars are still in existence. The boxcars are displayed at various parks and museums. Helena and Phillips County is home to the Arkansas Merci Train. The Helena-West Helena Advertising & Promotions Commission will continue enhancements and interpretative signage to the Merci Train location.
The project took 117 man-hours and 11 volunteers.
Special thanks go to Walter Morris, H&M Lumber Co., John King Jr., Troop 20, Eddie Schieffler, scoutmaster, Dennis Delk, Larry Delk & Associates; and the Helena-West Helena Advertising & Promotions Commission.
