Lawmakers are recommending that Arkansas' lottery fund $5,000 scholarships to four-year colleges and $2,000 scholarships to two-year schools.

The legislative oversight committee on Wednesday issued its recommendations for the scholarships being funded by the state's lottery. A co-chairman of the committee says the scholarships will go to more than 20,000 students.

The panel backed the amounts, despite a recommendation from Gov. Mike Beebe office that lower scholarships be awarded to students already in college. Beebe's office also told lawmakers they should assume the lottery will bring in less than the $112 million predicted by the games' director.

Lawmakers must approve the scholarship amounts during the legislative session, which begins Monday.
