Paden Phillips and Blake Harper set the tone of Friday night’s contest between the host DeSoto Thunderbirds and the visiting Central Holmes Trojans when they hooked up for a 57-yard scoring pass at the 10:17 mark of the first quarter.
The Trojans never got closer than 12-7 as DeSoto “Teed” off on CH Academy 40-7 before a partisan hometown crowd at Sam Howe Field.
The T-Birds scored their second touchdown at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter on a 3-yard run by Dillon Wiggins. Dylan Cruz set up the score with a 48-yard run from scrimmage. Both of DeSoto’s first 2-point conversion tries were unsuccessful as they led 12-0.
Briefly it appeared as though the Trojans might make a run at the Thunderbirds as they closed the gap to 12-7 on a 6-yard pass play with 3:49 left in the opening quarter. CH recovered a DeSoto fumble but the Thunderbirds returned the favor when they recovered a Trojan fumble at midfield.
Cody Warfield broke loose for what appeared to be a 48-yard touchdown run but the officials ruled that he stepped out of bounds at the Central Holmes 11. On the next play, Wiggins toted the pigskin into the end zone for the score. Harper ran in the 2-point conversion to give DeSoto a 20-7 cushion at the end of the first quarter.
DeSoto did not score again until the 4:37 mark of the second quarter. Matt Barnes capped off a sustained drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Cruz tacked on the 2-point conversion and the T-Birds were up 28-7.
DeSoto would up the score to 34-7 with 2:15 left in the half on a 46-yard run by Cruz.
The final score of the night came on the final play of the night when Cruz picked off a Trojan pass and ran 99 yards untouched for the score. It was the only touchdown of the second half. Coach Bill Beck substituted freely through most of that second half.
Wiggins ran the ball almost at will against the hapless Trojan defense. Cruz and Wiggins surpassed the 100-yard mark rushing for the night. On defense, the T-Birds were relentless and physical.
DeSoto (3-0) draws a bye this Friday but returns to action Sept. 17 against area rival Marvell Academy. Kick off is set for 7:30.
