Parents of five high school students being considered for expulsion from Marvell High School requested an open public hearing and brought their protest to the Marvell School Board Tuesday night.
After a heated session, the school board voted unanimously to expel all five for a Nov. 12 fight that involved 9 students. Four of those involved were reportedly suspended for their role in the altercation. Board President Shelton Guest called for further investigation into the brawl to ensure that the district was fair in their decision.
Marvell police were called to the scene that day and all students were taken into custody and questioned. Some parents allege that the police department questioned the minors without them present. One parent, Brenda Martin, was very upset that her 14 year-old-daughter was maced twice by the police while allegedly in handcuffs and once by school security.
Martin told the board that the school’s secretary, Alama Nesbitt, was inadvertently maced along with her child as well as the girl’s boyfriend. Neither Nesbitt nor the male student attended the session.
“That’s retaliation when you (police) attacked that girl in the hallway,” said Martin about the macing incident.
Guest noted that the issues with the police were separate from the disturbance at the school.
