  • Charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and possession of a controlled substance may be pending against a Helena-West Helena man after officers were dispatched to curtail a disturbance in front of a local business establishment, according to Helena-West Helena Police reports.
Police reports say on Oct. 20, Officer Steven Eldridge and Cpl. Tyner responded to a fight that was occurring on the Family Dollar Store parking lot.  Officers observed a SUV-type vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed and in an “elusive” manner.  They were in the process of pursuing the vehicle when the driver abruptly stopped and asked the officers what they wanted, using profanity.
Eldridge stated in his report that he ordered the man to get back in his vehicle and attempted to determine if the man had been involved in the altercation. The man continued to curse and refused to cooperate with Eldridge’s investigation.
In the narrative, Eldridge reports that he attempted to cuff the man several times but the man refused to comply with his commands. It was then the officer reports that the man attempted to reach for something inside the vehicle.
“…Not knowing what he had in the vehicle, I took control of the situation and sprayed pepper spray,” stated Eldridge.
According to Eldridge the pepper spray was ineffective because the man was wearing glasses.
“I then instructed (him) numerous times to place his hands behind his back or he would be sprayed again,” reported Eldridge.
The man refused, said the report, and he removed his glasses and took a “defensive stand.” Again, Eldridge used the pepper spray. The man continued to refuse to be cuffed.  The suspect was eventually placed in custody and taken to the police station for additional processing.
