  • Officer Charles Byrd apprehended a suspect attempting to break into the night deposit box of a local bank, according to Helena-West Helena Police reports.
Byrd was dispatched to Southern Bancorp’s main branch on Cherry Street in reference to an unknown person attempting to get into the bank’s night deposit box, the report stated. The report added that a caller told dispatch that a black male of medium build wearing a white striped shirt and blue jeans was trying to get into the deposit box but was unable to do so.
After failing to gain entry, the caller reported that man left the bank on foot heading north in an alley between Ohio and Cherry streets.
Byrd reported that’s where he spotted the suspect running from the area. The man attempted to hide behind an abandoned building just north of the bank. The officer ordered the suspect to show him his hands and get down on the ground.
The report states that Byrd took the suspect into custody. He then drove by the bank and observed that, “the night deposit box clearly had been tampered with.”
The suspect was transported to the Helena-West Police Department where he was identified. Byrd reported that the case was turned over to the department’s Burglary, Robbery and Auto Theft Division for further investigation.
The incident occurred on Aug. 23.
