  • Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Step right this way. The curtain will officially rise on the 2014 edition of the Tri-County Fair on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1 at the fairgrounds in Marvell. The gates will open at high noon.
    The fair officially launches with its traditional Labor Day Spectacular that features the Junior Miss and Miss Tri-County Fair pageants as well as the crowd favorite, the demolition derby. Monday also is Armband Day.
    The Junior Miss and Tri-County Fair Queen pageants will get underway at 7 and 8 p.m. respectively in the fairgrounds pavilion. The Junior Miss pageant is open to ages 13 through 17 and the Fair Queen Pageant is for ages 17 through 21. There is a $50 entry fee for both pageants and are due August 29. All contestants must be a resident of Phillips, Lee or Monroe counties. Entry forms are available from Barbie Washburn or at the Marvell Water Department. Winners and first and second runners-up will receive cash, trophies and flowers. Contestants must check in by 6 p.m.
    Contestants in the Fair Queen Pageant will be judged in private swimwear competition, evening gown and private interview. All contestants must participate in a 2 p.m. rehearsal.
    The winner will be eligible to enter the Arkansas State Fair Queen contest. She will receive a $200 cash award, a trophy, a crown and sash, as well as a savings bond. The first runner up will receive $125 in cash and a trophy. The second runner-up will get $100 in cash and a trophy.
    Day 2 on Tuesday will be Judging Day and the gates will open at 5 p.m. During the morning, home cooking entries, flowers and other exhibits will be judged.
    The Little and Young Miss Pageants will begin at 7 p.m. The Little Miss Pageant is open to ages 2-4; 4-5 and 6-8. There is a limit of 15 entrants in each age division and must be a resident of Phillips, Lee or Monroe counties. An entry fee of $35 is required and must be paid by Sept. 1.  Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third places. Check in time has been set for 6 p.m.
    Young ladies, ages 9 through 12 in the Tri-County region are eligible to compete in the Young Miss Pageant. There is an entry fee of $35 due September 1. Trophies also will be awarded for first, second and third places. Ditto for the 6 p.m. check in time.
    Wednesday, September 3 has been designated Senior Citizens Day. From 10 am until 2 p.m. there will be free admission for all senior citizens in the tri counties. Activities will include: bingo, prizes and a king and queen contest. Various health agencies throughout the area also will be represented. Refreshments will be provided.
    There is a junior and senior division talent show set for the evening hours beginning at 7 p.m. The junior division is open to ages 2-9 and the senior division is for ages, 10-20. Winners are eligible to perform at the Arkansas State Fair. Participants should check at 6 p.m. The entry fee is $30.
    Page 2 of 2 - Thursday night, September 4 is Family Night. From 5 to 10 p.m. all rides, some concession items and gate admission will be just $1.
    Friday, September 5 has been declared Football Day at the fair. From 6 to 10 p.m. armbands will be available for $20. Tri County’s Got Talent Show will be the highlight of the evening beginning at 7 p.m. The entry fee is just $20 and participants have the opportunity to win cash prizes – $250 for first place, $150 for second, and $100 for third. Acts can vary from singing to dancing to acrobatics. Entry forms are available at the Marvell Water Department.
    Gates will open for the final day of the fair at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The day’s events will include the Baby Miss and Mister contests at 9 a.m. and the finals of the demolition derby at 7 p.m.
    Entry fees for the baby pageants are $35 and the deadline to enter is September 2. The Wee Miss and Mister pageant is open to 0-12 months; Baby Miss and Baby Mister, 13 to 18 months; and the Tiny Miss & Tiny Master, 19 to 24 months. Each division is limited to 15 entries. There will be first and second place winners in each division. Entry forms may be picked up at the Marvell Water Department.
