The Helena Arkansas Daily World - Helena, AR
  • Phillips County woman will reach century mark on August 4

  • A centenarian is defined as someone who is 100 years old or older. On Aug. 4, Phillips County will have a new centenarian, Alice Bragg. Rarely do we meet people who reach the age of 100, and rarely do we meet someone like Alice. She resides in the house that she and her husband built in the Midland Heights area of Helena seventy years ago. She is fiercely independent, cooking and cleaning house for herself.

Alice Bragg moved to Arkansas from Yazoo County, Miss., when she was 20 years old to be with her mother. In 1935 she married David Lee Bragg and they had three children, two daughters and a son. One of the daughters has preceded her in death and the other two children live in Chicago. She has more grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she can count. She does know, however, that the youngest is two years and two months old.
When she first moved to Arkansas she worked in the fields, picking cotton. After moving to town, her husband worked on highway construction crews and Alice worked in private homes, making $3 a day.
She says she lives a Christian life and reads the Bible every night. When asked what advice she would give to the younger generation she said, “Serve the Lord.”
One of the most amazing things about Alice is that she only takes two medications, one for high blood pressure and one for arthritis.
A special program will take place at Springlake M. B. Church on Sunday, Aug. 3, to celebrate the life of Alice Bragg. Congratulatory letters and phone calls have come in from national and state politicians and religious leaders.
Alice lives by the motto, “Let your light shine.” We have been blessed to have Alice Bragg shine her light in Phillips County.
