  • Playing dead may have saved the life of a Helena-West Helena man involved in a shooting incident that occurred in the city on July 27 according police reports.
Cpl. Phillip Keys reported in his narrative that he was directed to interview a gunshot victim in the ER of the local hospital. The victim reported that he went to a residence on South 8th Street to take back his dog that he alleges was stolen from him.
The man states in the report that the occupants of the residence were waiting on him when he arrived. According to the victim, as soon as he walked around the shed in the alley behind the home, he was shot. The man told Keys that he heard one man tell another man to “finish him off.”
According to the report, he heard the man reply, “I got him in the neck; he’s dead man.”  The man told Keys that he was kicked and stabbed while lying on the ground.
The victim got up and ran to his father’s house after he heard a door close. He told the officer that he did not see his attackers.
The investigation has been turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division of the H-WHPD.
