  • The filing period for running for municipal office in Helena-West Helena opens this Friday, July 25 and continues through noon, Friday, Aug. 15 – 22 days. All city offices will be up for grabs in the November 4 general election.
    According to the qualifications set forth by “Running for Public Office – A Plain English Handbook for Candidates – 2014 edition, candidates seeking a municipal office:
    •Must be a qualified elector
    •Must be a U.S. Citizen
    •Must be an Arkansas resident
    •Must live in the jurisdiction to be represented at the time of filing and remain there throughout the term
    •Must be lawfully registered to vote
    •Must never have been convicted of embezzlement of public money, bribery, forgery, or other infamous crimes; and
    •Must be 18 years or older.
    The Arkansas Board of Election in conjunction with the Secretary of State’s office and the Arkansas Ethics Commission published the handbook.
    All qualified citizens interested in running for municipal office should pick up an information packet at the County Clerk’s Office in the Phillips County Courthouse.
    Potential candidates must file a petition signed by not fewer than 30 electors of the ward or city in which the election is to be held. They also must sign a political practice pledge and affidavit of eligibility during the filing period.
