  • Shots rang out in the North 5th Street area of Helena-West Helena on Thursday, May 1, according to police reports.
Officer Steven Eldridge was the assigned officer when H-WHPD got the call. In his report, the officer states that as he headed to his patrol vehicle, a man approached him and told him that a woman had been following him while he was driving north on Fifth Street.  As the woman’s vehicle got closer, she pulled over to the side of the road and a man got out on the passenger side.
The report states the victim told the officer that as he was driving away, the man fired approximately 12 times at his car. Three shots struck the vehicle, twice in the rear bumper with the rounds lodging in the Styrofoam surrounding the gas tank and once in the rear passenger side top portion of the seat.
Eldridge reported that he and Lt. John Bailey went to the scene of the incident with the victim. A total of 12 shell casings were found and collected by Bailey. While searching the victim’s vehicle, Capt. Carl Vann of H-WHPD’s Criminal Investigation Division found one bullet slug under the rear passenger side seat.
The report also states that a witness was on south Fifth Street adjacent to Plaza Street when he heard the gunshots.
According to the report, when the witness looked in the direction of the shots, he saw the alleged shooter looking back from inside of the vehicle that he got out of before he opened fire on the victim’s vehicle.
The case is still under investigation. The report did not indicate that any arrests had been made in the case or if any charges had been filed.
