  • A Helena-West Helena man was an apparent victim of theft by deception. The incident occurred Tuesday around 11:45 a.m. and began on the Wal-Mart parking lot according to police reports.
Capt. Carl Vann of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the H–WHPD reported that a black male approached the subject at Wal-Mart pretending to be looking for a place to live. The man asked the subject for a ride from Wal-Mart to Dollar General Store where they met a second man.
Vann’s report states that there was some discussion concerning money. The victim apparently was asked to show his money in which he did. The man was then asked to put his money in a brown paper bag and the alleged perpetrators also placed their money in a brown paper bag and both bags were placed in the trunk of the vehicle.
The subjects proceeded to get out of the vehicle, switched the bags and got away with $300 in cash belonging to the victim.
Police are hoping the initial meeting between the subject and the first man was recorded on Wal-Mart security cameras.
No arrests have been made and the CID is continuing its investigation.
Back in February H-WHPD Police Chief Uless Wallace warned the public in a news report of a scam called a penguin drop, similar to the incident reported above.
