Besides the attempted murder charge, which is a Class A felony, according to Helena-West Helena Police Chief Uless Wallace the suspect also faces charges of handgun possession by a minor, a Class D felony; disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor; and violation of a city ordinance unlawfully discharging a firearm in the city limits.
In a press release, Wallace reported that Austin was shot attempting to break up a fight when shots rang out. One of the bullets struck her in the right back area traveling across her body from right to left “shattering her liver.”
Wallace added that Austin was flown to The Trauma Center in Memphis where she underwent emergency surgery. Wallace’s report adds that Austin has since been released from The Trauma Center and is convalescing at home.
Witnesses told The Helena World earlier that the shooting incident was the result of an argument between two females over a cell phone. As the argument heated up, several males got involved with the altercation resulting in over 50 shots being fired.
The running gun battle began on South 4th Street and spilled over onto Third Street. Shots also were reportedly fired into a residence.
