  • Beginning July 1 the Helena-West Helena School District will be under the guidance of a new superintendent according to Suzann McCommon, current chief executive officer of the district.
Arkansas Commission of Education Dr. Tom Kimbrell has appointed John Hoy, a veteran administrator, to the post. The local school system will remain under state control.
“I am looking forward to working with him,” commented McCommon. “I have worked with him in the past in the area of educational cooperatives.
“John wants to give back and desires to end his career working with a Delta school,”
     McCommon continued.
Hoy graduated from Hughes Public Schools. He served as a math teacher in a couple of Delta schools. He was federal programs coordinator for the Lee County School District and deputy superintendent of the Monticello Public School System.
Hoy is currently associate assistant to the commissioner of education, Kimbrell.
McCommon reports that Hoy is anxious to come to Helena-West Helena and plans to reside here.
“He is bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to our Delta community and our school district,” said McCommon.
McCommon called Hoy’s appointment as superintendent a “win-win” situation for Helena-West Helena Public Schools.
“This will give me the opportunity to devote my full attention to the co-op (Great Rivers Educational Cooperative) and the district will now have a full-time superintendent,” she said.
Hoy will be leaving the department of education on June 30 and will begin his work in Helena-West Helena on July 1, the start of a new fiscal year for the district.
“I am truly excited about this,” concluded McCommon. “John understands the Delta and the needs of this district. He has worked closely with other similar districts.”
