Robert Earl Murphy Sr. passed away on Feb. 13, 2014 of natural causes at the home of his daughter in Utah.
Robert Earl Murphy Sr. passed away on Feb. 13, 2014 of natural causes at the home of his daughter in Utah. He was born in Salina, Utah to Earl and Grace Murphy on Feb. 8, 1923. Some of his many accomplishments in life included being a veteran of the U.S. Army in WWII, missionary to the Southern States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, receiving a bachelor's degree in accounting at Brigham Young University, a master's degree at Mississippi State University and managing the Ellis & Hirsberg CPA firm in Helena. Earl married Melba Whitsell on Nov. 24, 1948 in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. They raised five children. Melba preceded him in death. He married Thelma B. Feemster on Dec. 27, 1991. An active member of the LDS Church serving in many positions, including branch president for 27 years and high council for the Memphis Stake. He was also a member of Helena Lions Club, American Legion-Post 0041, and taught accounting at Phillips College. Wife, Melba, a son, Robert Jr., three brothers and a sister, precedes him in death. He leaves his wife, Thelma of Arkansas; daughters, Kathie (Tom) Hunter, Sherry (Doug) Duncan, Debbie Murphy, all of Utah and son, Ernie (Slavica) Murphy of Mississippi; stepdaughters, Nora Crawford of Mississippi and Linda (Tom) Tyler of Arkansas; a brother, Paul (Marie) Anderson of California; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Dad always said, "I am a very rich man because of my family and blessed to have two lovely women to love me in my life." Funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. A viewing will be held before the funeral at the Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, Helena-West Helena, will direct services.
