Helena was the recipient of several awards at the annual Arkansas Delta Byways banquet Friday evening at Southland Gaming and Racing in West Memphis. The Media Support Award was awarded to “Sunshine” Sonny Payne.
The Hospitality Award was given to the Arkansas Welcome Centers in Phillips, Chicot, and Crittenden counties. Other nominees included Fairfield Inn and Suits in Craighead County and Hoots BBQ in Desha County.
The Battle of Helena 150 was the recipient of the Festival/Event of the Year. Other nominees in this category included Owl Fest in Desha County and Rockabilly Boogiefest in Craighead County.
Warfield Concert Series was given second place in the Cultural Heritage Award. First place in this category was the WWII Japanese American Internment Museum in Desha County. This exhibit was installed by the Delta Cultural Center.
The evening came to a close with the announcement of the Delta Byways Tourism Person of the Year. Helena's own Cathy Cunningham was awarded with the distinction after having worked tirelessly on the Civil War Helena initiative.
Mrs. Cunningham has been the driving force behind the Civil War interpretation in Helena and the Helena World congratulates her and all the winners from Friday night's banquet.
