Hays Supermarket located at 590 Oakland Avenue in Midland Heights is closing its doors as of Friday, Jan. 17. According to President Michael J. King in a prepared statement to The Helena World, “After nearly three years of trying to make the Helena store profitable, we were unable to do so. At some point it is time to re-evaluate what you are doing in the market and make a very difficult decision.” He continued, “On a positive note, we are able to transfer a majority of our Helena employees to the West Helena location.” King said in an interview, “We got our financial statement here recently at the end of the year…we weren't making any money; it just comes down to economics.” King continued, “It is a tough decision but at some point you have to look at what you're doing- you want to be able to pay the people that are working for you – you want to be able to pay all the bills.” Hays has operated the supermarket on Oakland Avenue since March 2011. Store hours during their last week in operation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all items in the store will be discounted 25 percent off shelf price.
