By the end of January, KIPP Delta Public School will have a new roof in place at the Malco Theater. According to Chintan Desai, the school secured a five-year lease on the building in July 2011. It was then that a manager of the property was appointed and "a facilities budget for the building was established." She continued, "These funds were used over the course of the first year to address a number of deferred maintenance items.”
Work has been on going at the Malco, including “Stabilization and repairs to the marquee were executed, along with interior painting, electrical upgrades and updates to the theatrical sound and lighting systems."
The Malco Theater has been the host over the past two years of events including "choral concerts, theatrical performances, community and civic-oriented events, as well as functioning as a classroom for the theatre and vocal departments" said Desai.
One of the major challenges for KIPP Delta in maintaining the Malco includes a leaking roof, which gives “our program unnecessary challenges.” She continued, “The scope of work for this project involves removing the existing sheet metal roof panels, flashings, gutter, duct housing and associated wood framing, gutter, and the original built-up-roof down to the metal decking.”
With the help of an $110,000 grant through the USDA and $20,000 from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, the Malco's renovations should be complete by the end of the month.
