  • If you were born after Dec. 31, 1968, or if you are just a concerned sportsman or wildlife enthusiast, Arlene Green, regional education coordinator for the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, says make plans to attend the free hunter education course hosted by the Phillips County Library. The course will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the library in Helena on Saturday, Jan. 18. “The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission's 'mandatory hunter education' regulation went into effect July 1, 1985,” commented Green. “The regulation makes it unlawful for any person born after Dec. 31, 1968, to take or attempt to take wildlife with forearms, crossbow or conventional bow, without first having on their person proof that he or she has satisfactorily completed an approved hunter education course.” Exceptions to the regulations are hunters whose birth dates are before 1969 and hunters younger than 16 when under the direct supervision of a licensed adult at least 21 years old. You must attend all sessions to complete the course. The course includes such topics as firearms safety, conservation, wildlife management, sportsmanship, archery, muzzle loading, first aid, survival and other hunting information. The purpose of the regulation and the course is to inform and educate those enjoying the great outdoors, which will lead to safer and more responsible behavior by all outdoorsmen throughout Arkansas. The course is free and open. Registration is required by calling 870-338-3537 or email libraryevent@yahoo.com. For additional information, contact the Phillips County Library at 870-338-3537.
