At a presentation made at the Eliza Miller Primary Christmas Program Thursday morning, Bettye Hendrix presented a grant check to Eliza Miller Primary School and the Eliza Miller Primary Parent Teachers Organization to cover a significant portion of a $70,000 playground equipment project. On hand were the approximately 600 students and many parents who were also there for the primary's school's annual Christmas program. The project is a joint effort between the Helena-West Helena School District, the Eliza Miller Primary PTO, and the foundation. The PTO has been raising private funds for the project all semester. Hendrix, representing the Helena Health Foundation, made some opening remarks to begin the program. She said, “I am a former teacher and I know the hard work that each of you do. We are glad to be able to work with the schools on this project so that kids can have a safe place to play, which helps to keep them healthy.” PTO President Tina Simes was extremely excited about the grant award. She said, “This is huge step forward for our school and our students. We all worked together and this is going to be great when everything is installed next semester.” Also on hand were Principal Jewel Hamilton and School Advisory Board member Andrew Bagley, who is also a member of the PTO. Hamilton said, “A quality playground is important for our students and I just want to thank the parents, the foundation, and our staff for the hard work that they do for our kids. It is a team effort.” Bagley said, “This is just another example of great things happening every day in the Helena-West Helena School District. I want to thank the PTO for being the driving force keeping this project on a forward trajectory, raising private funds through several sources, and for their work with the school administration on moving this application forward. Finally, I want to thank the Helena Health Foundation for being supportive of our efforts to help our public school students.” In the picture attached are: Front: Eliza Miller Primary Kindergarten students.
