  • Over the weekend, Helena dodged a proverbial bullet, as the winter storm that had weather experts on edge did not produce the widespread damage that it was forecasted to. By Saturday morning, power outages were sporadic from Marvell to Helena and the police and street departments began reporting trees down across the area. Car accidents were commonplace as road conditions worsened. One accident on Stringtown Road had police officers extricating travelers from their wrecked vehicle. As the ice weighted trees down across town, several very large trees fell, smashing through homes and power lines. Streetlights were affected as the police and street departments worked in tandem to keep the community safe. Live comments on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/thedailyworld reported that power was not off more than a few hours at a time. The Humane Society of the Delta was on standby as they delivered barrels with hay to provide shelter to animals in the community and the American Red Cross was ready to give their assistance as well over the weekend. No injuries were reported to the Helena World throughout the weekend and power has been restored to most homes.
