  • As you begin purchasing gifts this Christmas, Dr. Tarsha Smith, Angel Tree coordinator at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA), urges gift givers to purchase a gift that won't go to waste, a gift for a local child in need. The annual Angel Tree project, with tremendous support from PCCUA faculty, staff, students, and area residents, is now underway. “This is a very vital undertaking,” said Smith. “Our 'angels' are children from local school districts who have been nominated by their teachers as having specific needs. Quite a few of these children have expressed their 'wants' via letters to Santa. These angels come from homes that run the very real risk of not being able to provide these things for the holidays.” This year's Angel Tree list includes over 100 angels hanging from the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Administration Building at PCCUA. Those who want to help out are asked to look over the list and see if they will be able to sponsor an angel. Those who feel that the task is too great to handle alone can get a group together to sponsor an angel. To sponsor an angel, follow three easy steps. Go to the Administration Building lobby and select an angel from the Angel Tree or contact Dr. Smith at tsmith@pccua.edu for the list in e-mail form. Then, let either Dr. Smith or Judy Bernard in the PCCUA Administrative Offices know which angel (or angels) you (or you and your group) have chosen. Finally, purchase the things that the angel has listed in the wants and needs columns and deliver them to the Registrar's Office, along with the angel ornament from the tree. The Sigma Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will be sponsoring a wrapping party to wrap the presents and will be in charge of elf delivery of the gifts. Make a difference in the life of a child this Christmas by sponsoring an angel. This project is open to the community. The deadline to have the gifts purchased and delivered to the Registrar's Office is Wednesday, December 4.
