Helena-West Helena has completed its series of budget workshops. Thursday night the street department, the sanitation department, and the administration met with members of the city Council to discuss their respective annual budgets for 2014.
The Street Department submitted a budget that included an addition of five new employees and a maintenance increase to $20,000 to maintain the city's traffic signals. The budget proposed includes $1,123,366.28 total department expenses plus $375,052.00 for salaries for 19 employees.
The sanitation department head Ben Jones expressed his concerns regarding the increasing expense in repairing equipment. The sanitation budget included a decrease in one equipment operator and a dispatcher, saving the city $19,885, bringing the total expense in operating the sanitation department to $970,696.58 plus $341,112.38 for salaries.
The city council will meet Monday night at 6 p.m. The council has until Jan. 31 to submit a final budget.
