Tuesday, Helena-West Helena residents will go to the polls to vote on a street improvement bond issue. If passed, the vote will allow Helena-West Helena to enter into a bond agreement that will allow a street paving and improvement program.
According to City Councilman Jay Holloway, "The funds for this issue are from Amendment 91 that was passed statewide levying a temporary 1/2 cent sales and use tax for a period of not more than 10 years."
Senate Bill 541 was passed into legislation by the 89th General Assembly in their regular session in February 2013.
Holloway continued, "We are paying this tax regardless if this bond issue election passes or fails...If this election passes, we will be able to do a sizable and noticeable street paving program. If not we will have limited funds to pave streets annually."
The polls are open until 7:30 p.m.
