In 2011, the city of Helena-West Helena received a grant from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's Wildlife Recreation Facilities Program for $67,560 to widen and lengthen the Mississippi River boat ramp. Contracted to complete the renovations is Smith & Weiland Surveyors and Engineers. Following the completion of the work, the boat ramp will be fully accessible, even when the river is low. The ramp will be one of the largest public access boat ramps on the lower Mississippi. According to Julia Malinowski, director of the Helena Advertising and Promotion Commission, “Our access point to the lower Mississippi is a huge asset for Helena, as we're the only downtown on the Mississippi River between Memphis and Vicksburg.”
