Having dominated the contest early, the Marvell Academy Eagles allowed the visiting North Sunflower Academy Rebels to claw their way back into the contest Friday before eventually pulling out an exciting 66-62 victory on “Senior Night”.
The Eagles led 44-22 at the half. The Rebels roared back to tie the game with three minutes to play. Caleb Gannon broke free for a long run to put the game in the “W” column for the Eagles, who are now 3-5.
North Sunflower did score again but with only nine ticks left on the clock. Josh Mullinax recovered the Rebels onside kick attempt and the Eagles took a knee to put the game safely away.
Marvell Academy lost to the Rebels 30-20 earlier in the season.
“To beat them in this district game was a great feeling,” stated head football coach Ben Durham, “especially for our seniors who celebrated senior night.
“We should have finished them off in the first half,” continued Durham, “but our kids kept playing hard and eventually pulled it out in the end. It really showed what they are made of.”
Gannon was four-for-four on the night for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 14 carries for 273 yards rushing and four scores.
Jared Williams carried the ball six times for 64 yards on the ground and a touchdown. On defense, Williams contributed seven tackles and a quarterback sack.
Collin White scored one rushing touchdown and returned an interception for another score. He also blocked an extra point kick.
Mullinax caught three passes for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, he chipped in with five tackles.
Also defensively, Hugo Garcia had four tackles, Austin Miller six tackles, Daniel Clatworthy, four tackles and Bud Parker, 7 tackles.
Marvell winds down the regular season this Friday night with a trip to Marks, Miss. to take on the Delta Academy Raiders. The Raiders beat the Eagles 30-8 on Sept. 6.
