Between Caleb Gannon and Collin White the Marvell Academy Eagles ran up 248 yards rushing yards and five touchdowns on just seven plays in a 56-14 homecoming rout of the Strider Academy Rams Friday night. Gannon was the leading ground gainer with 128 yards on five carries, good for three touchdowns. White toted the ball twice for 120 yards and a pair of scores. Jared Williams scored on a 13-yard run and also chipped in with three successful 2-point conversions. Josh Mullinax was a standout on defense with eight tackles and a forced fumble. Hugo Garcia had three tackles and contributed an offensive rushing touchdown. Freshman Larry Parker had three tackles. Freshman Austin Miller made two tackles and picked off a pass. “It was a good victory on homecoming,” commented head football coach Ben Durham. “We got to play everybody and several players got to carry the ball.” Durham went on to say that the freshmen and eighth graders got to suit up for the homecoming event. “Several made contributions,” he added. According to Durham, the highlight of the night for him was when Joe Ford, a senior defensive tackle, ran in a 2-point conversion. “He (Ford) has worked hard all year and it was a great way to cap homecoming,” said the coach. With the win, Marvell Academy improves to 2-5. They will host North Sunflower Academy Rebels, 3-6, 1-3 this Friday night. The Rebels edged the Eagles 30-20 in an earlier season meeting at Drew, Miss.
