  • Tuesday, Oct. 1 was Adopt-A-Highway cleanup day for this group. In 2001, the Phillips County Teacher's Day Committee adopted a 1-mile section of Highway 49 leading to the Helena Bridge. This stretch of highway was named in honor of Mattye Mae Whyte Woodridge, a local educator who was instrumental in establishing National Teacher's Day. Woodridge was a charter member of Mu Chi Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. MCO and the PCTCD have teamed up several years for this cleanup project. Annie Ruth Pike, recently retired committee chair of the PCTCD, directed the cleanup activities.
