  • Marvell-Elaine Reads hosted a celebration event for students and parents last Friday, Sept. 27 at Marvell-Elaine Elementary School. The event was held in partnership with the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN). Marvell-Elaine Reads is a community-wide partnership of the Boys, Girls, Adults, Community Development Center (BGACDC) and Marvell-Elaine Elementary School. During the celebration, Mayor Donald Cutlip and Angela Duran, campaign director for the Arkansas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading gave remarks. Karen Walker, government and community relations coordinator for AETN, read to students. PBS KIDS characters Clifford the Big Red Dog, the Cat in the Hat, and Arthur were on hand to visit and take photos with the students as they read together and learned about the importance of literacy. “As a result of our Summer Day Camp, students are one step closer to reading proficiently by the end of third grade,” said Louis Bennett, coordinator of Marvell-Elaine Reads at BGACDC. “While many children lose ground over the summer, our students either maintained or increased their reading levels.” For more information on Marvell-Elaine Reads, contact Louis Bennett (lbennettjr@yahoo.com) at BGACDC.
