Make no mistake about it the Wynne Yellowjackets had a tough fight on their hands at Cad Polk Stadium Friday night. However, the Jackets managed to score late in the contest and pulled out a 20-13 win over the Central Cougars.
On the opening possession Wynne drove the ball right down the field only to be met by a stubborn host of Cougar defenders inside the red zone. The Yellowjackets' first drive of the night came up empty following a solid goal line stance by Central.
Central took a 13-6 lead on a 57-yard scoring pass from quarterback Curley Brewer to Markease Williams in the second quarter. The Cougars took that lead into the locker room at the half.
Wynne scored 14 unanswered points in the second half. What turned out to be the winning score came with 8:18 to play. Central had a couple of scoring opportunities but simply could not convert.
The Cougars entered the contest as heavy underdogs having lost to Wynne on the Jackets' home turf a year ago by a lopsided 43-0 score.
Central, 1-2, opens 5A Central Conference play here next Friday night against the Jacksonville Red Devils.
