  • Try as they may, the Tunica Blue Devils just simply could not stop Reed St. Columbia, Bradley Harper and Rowland Brothers. The trio combined for five touchdowns and a pair of field goals for the DeSoto Thunderbirds in a 40-6 rout at Sam Howe Field Friday night. The T-Birds didn't let a little thing like a heavy rain keep them from racking up the points. St. Columbia scored a pair of touchdowns and Harper scored three times. Two of Harper's TDs came on long gains, one on a run of 77 yards. Harper also hauled in a scoring pass from quarterback Zac Manning. St. Columbia's second TD and the final score of the night for the T-Birds came early in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard scamper down the sidelines. DeSoto was in control of the game before the end of the first half. Brothers nailed a 30-yard field goal just before the intermission to put the Thunderbirds up 23-6. DeSoto score 17 unanswered points in the second half, including a 35-yard field goal by Brothers in the third quarter. Brothers narrowly missed a 45-yard attempt early in the fourth quarter. The Thunderbird kicker also nailed four extra points. Ryan Self had a standout game on defense recovering five Tunica fumbles. Jake Halbert also performed well defensively making several key tackles. DeSoto won its 1A North Conference opener in convincing style. The T-Birds travel to Marianna this Friday night to take on Lee Academy.
